Types of Laser Eye Surgery

SMILE PRO

LASIK

PRK

SMILE™ Pro (Small-Incision Lenticule Extraction) laser eye surgery is an exciting breakthrough in refractive laser correction for short-sightedness. Canberra Eye Laser is the first in the state to offer SMILE Pro.

Using the latest technology available in laser eye surgery, the ZEISS VisuMax 800 laser creates a refractive lenticule in the intact cornea, which is then removed through a keyhole incision.

This leaves the cornea stronger as the incision is much shorter and a flap is not lifted. Because no flap is lifted, disruption to the cornea is minimal and corneal strength is maintained.

The removal of the lenticule changes the form of the cornea, correcting the refraction and improving vision.

LASIK eye surgery was the most commonly used method for treating refractive eye problems before the advent of SMILE.

Canberra Eye Laser uses the ZEISS VisuMax 800 femtosecond laser to create a flap in the cornea. Once the corneal flap is lifted, a MEL 90 Excimer laser provides customised refractive treatment to the underlying bed of the cornea. The excimer laser beam safely and accurately reshapes the cornea to patient-specific requirements.

The highly developed optics of the laser make the finest corrections possible, leaving the surrounding tissue unharmed. Intelligent technology tracks even the slightest eye movements during treatment and guides the laser beam to continue to work in precisely the right position.

PRK (PhotoRefractive Keratectomy) surgery uses an excimer laser to reshape the cornea. PRK differs to LASIK in that the laser is applied to the surface layers of the cornea rather than the underlying bed of the cornea.

The epithelium, a layer of cells covering the cornea, is gently removed and the laser is applied to the exposed tissue. A bandage contact lens is placed on the eye to help with comfort and the healing process for 3 to 4 days.

The effects of PRK are not instantaneous due to the ongoing healing process of the cornea. Improvement to eyesight is typically slower with PRK, however, PRK may be recommended instead of SMILE™, FLEx or LASIK for people whose cornea is thinner or whose career limits their procedure choice.

How long does the free assessment take?

The consultation usually takes half an hour to forty-five minutes. During the session, we will conduct diagnostic tests to determine if your eyes are suitable for treatment and to discuss your lifestyle needs and expectations. Treatment options and costs will then be outlined. No dilating eye drops are needed.

How much is the assessment?

Our assessments are complimentary, as are any doctor consultations that may be required to check your eyes' suitability, if required.

How experienced are the Canberra Eye Laser doctors?

Our doctors established the first laser centre in Canberra in 1997. The whole team has many years of experience in refractive laser surgery. We place high importance on keeping our skills and equipment up to date.

Canberra Eye Laser was the first clinic to perform SMILE in Australia, and is now the longest-running SMILE clinic in the country.

How long does laser eye surgery take?

Expect to be at Canberra Eye Laser for approximately 2 hours. You will be in the treatment room for about 20-30 minutes, but the crucial laser time is only seconds for each eye.  Your family is welcome to watch the procedure from our viewing area if you wish and we can send you a recording of your procedure upon request.

Is the procedure painful?

The procedure is not painful and no needles are used. Local anaesthetic eye drops are used to numb your eyes once you are in the procedure room. Some slight sensation to touch on your eyelids and forehead may be felt. You will notice a mild pressure sensation on your eye during the procedure. You don't need to worry about blinking and the doctor will talk you through the whole process.

How long before I can see clearly?

Your vision will recover quickly after surgery. Most people wake the next day and are surprised with how well they can see. It is normal for minor fluctuations in vision to occur over the following days and weeks as healing continues.

Can I afford laser eye surgery?

Our price for surgery includes all consultations, diagnostics tests, re-treatments (if necessary) and reviews up to 12 months. There are no hidden extras and everyone receives personalised "platinum care". We do offer a payment plan and do not engage any third party credit providers.

Medicare do not cover refractive laser costs, however, some private health funds do offer varying levels of rebate, including BUPA and Defence Health.

The cost of your specific procedure will be discussed at the initial consultation once treatment parameters are known.
